Decadence Now! Visions of Excess

The Decadence Now! Visions of Excess is the international exhibition project which works with the concept of decadence in current art. The exhibition is not divided chronologically, but thematically into sequential sections which fluently and logically relate to each other, and which also create a sort-of imaginary closing circle.

During the past several yeas, the concepts of decadence have begun to appear more and more in art theory, often in relation to current art. The commonness of the concept of decadence, or its parallel existence outside of the sphere of art, also enables new methodological processes and combinations, and discovers new territories and relationships. Decadent art is excessive, it exceeds the level of what is generally acceptable, and it provocatively demolishes the most sensitive taboos. Decadence is also firmly connected to the clear stance of outsider individualism.

Decadence is a theme which is topical in current culture, or better yet, it is once again topical. The apocalyptic feeling of ruin and crisis of our civilization incites the increased interest in the dark side of humans and of the world itself.

Starting on the 1970's, we can monitor the continual effort of the artists like Jeff Koons, Cindy Sherman, Nobuyoshi Araki, Jake a Dinos Chapman, Robert Mapplethorpe, Damien Hirst, Zhang Peng, Keith Haring, Andres Serrano, Gottfried Helnwein etc. to work with typical decadent themes.

In relation to this, the increased interest in decadence from the view of the expert and lay public is also relevant. Exhibitions which present works of decadent art evoke enthusiastic reactions in the same manner as public scandals do. However, they always open discussions on an entire line of key themes like alienation, ugliness, beauty, hallucination, death, pornography, drugs, sickness and madness, that form basic questions of current culture and society.

It is also apparent that a theme which is seemingly obsolete and out-of-date, such as censorship (internal and external), once again makes an appearance on the scene in the context of the new political correctness. Decadent art is subversive, impulsive, it does not evoke indifference, but it requires the formulization of a clear stance. In this sense, decadence is excessive, extreme and also provocative. Alienation, seeming impartialness or depersonalized voyeurism is also a clearly profiled attitude of decadence.

This exhibition presents contemporary artists and their works in the fields of painting, sculpture, photography, and videos in five main areas, including Pop, extended by an independent installation, “Room No. 13,” in the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague, which indicates current trends in fashion or design.

The exhibition shall be completed by an entire line of accompanying programs (music, film, literature etc.). The Arbor Vitae publishing house, in cooperation with Galerie Rudolfinum will release an extensive publication, whose author is Otto M. Urban, curator of the exhibition, that mapping the entire exhibition project from not only the graphic arts viewpoint, but also from the philosophical, historical and social viewpoints. Of course, a rich picture part documenting the exhibited works will be the centre point of the whole book.

Decadence is a highly relevant subject in contemporary culture, or rather, one which is relevant once more. The apocalyptic sense of ruin and crisis within our civilisation has inspired a heightened interest in the dark side of both the human soul and of the world as such. From the 1970s onwards, one may observe a continuous attempt to address archetypal decadent themes in a wide range of artists, among them Jeff Koons, Cindy Sherman, Nobuyoshi Araki, Jake and Dinos Chapman, Robert Mapplethorpe, Damien Hirst, Zhang Peng, Keith Haring, Andres Serrano, Ivan Pinkava, JiřiÅL Černický, Gilbert & George, Gottfried Helnwein, Josef Bolf, Jürgen Klauke and others. In this respect there is also a visible increase of interest on the part of both scholars and the general public. Exhibitions presenting works of decadent art generate an enthusiastic response as well as provoking scandal. However, they invariably open further debate on many key themes such as alienation, repugnance, beauty, hallucination, death, pornography, violence, drugs, disease, or madness, questions which inform and underline numerous issues in contemporary culture and society.

It also becomes evident that issues which are seemingly obsolete and irrelevant,

exemplified by censorship (both internal and external), have once again come to the fore in

the context of new political correctness. Decadent art is subversive and insurrectionary;

instead of indifference it demands that the viewer articulate a clear stance. In this sense,

decadence is radical, being extreme as well as provocative. Alienation, an apparent sense of

detachment or a depersonalized voyeurism, also represent a clearly articulated decadent

stance towards society.

The subject is divided into five basic sections, tracing a sort of imaginary journey of a

contemporary artist – Excess of the Self: Pain, Excess of the Body: Sex, Excess of Beauty: Pop,

Excess of the Mind: Madness, Excess of Life: Death. It winds through the labyrinth of crucial

questions connected to the very essence of our existence. However, it chooses to partake

of a route whose meaning is often elusive, a journey which is no less tempting for being

dangerous. It is a quest which finds images hitherto unseen, re-opening time and again the

eternal debate of the very meaning and raison d'être of art. Sexuality and anguish represent

two of the main themes of contemporary decadence, hereby in fact co-defining it in

retrospect. Though often interconnected with other issues, these themes nevertheless

always derive from a radical stance on the part of an artist.

In reference to the Flesh Project

In using meat it is almost impossible for the viewer to have an emotionally detached reaction to the pieces. Is this something that you like about the medium?

I don’t generate the effect evoked by my sculptures, the flesh does. Essentially, they can be regarded as Duschamp-type ready-mades, where the original object carries the whole show.

On one hand, there exists a sex centred attitude, further amplified by the mass media, which is solely obsessed with the body and regards people as mere objects, on the other, we live in a prudish world, that’s rooted in Christianity, struggling with a sense of guilt and revulsion against the human body. Because of the latter our society turns away from where it can sense the smell of death. As there is a cult of body building in terms of sports, diet and fashion, to the same extent the opposite of these are considered taboo. Why? According to Hermann Nitsch, facing the reality of flesh is one of the fundamental conflicts of human existence and, since direct engagement with the flesh has become a taboo, our sensory reactions to it are particularly intense due precisely to its being a taboo.

The Hungarian FHM got in touch with me. A magazine that men buy to masturbate over naked women and expensive cars. Half a page is always reserved for “art”, for instance the artist painting with shit, the world’s greatest pumpkin carver and the like. They were asking for pictures of my work and I refused them thinking they do not in any way represent a platform of exposure for me. In the end, they did manage to get hold of some and the article was published. A paper in which the climax is represented by a vagina peeking out did not dare show my “flesh-vagina” sculptures, only the “blowjob” one (using it merely as an excuse to express their homophobia). So that’s what the Flesh Project is about.

What inspires you to create certain parts of the body in isolation?

There is one simple reason for this. The technique. Everything else apart from faces and the genitals is too complex to be sewn “nicely” together using inanimate flesh. As a result of this the story developed in the way it did. Technique influenced content and vice versa... If it’s genitalia, it’s women, if it’s women it’s the loved ones. Now the loved ones are gone.

What is it that drives you to explore the human form in such depth through this type of sculpture?

What’s written above applies to me too. I admire the pictures of bodies and feel repulsed by the sight of my own and other people’s bodies if they do not reach a certain aesthetic standard determined by others.

In creating works from constructed flesh it takes the sculptures one step closer to reality which inevitably causes it to take on a controversial nature, how do you feel about this?

The inner contradiction of flesh constructs lies in the fact that the deceivingly faithful simulacrum, which in essence are made of the material of their imitated originals, paradoxically are only as repulsive as the “original” human ones.

A true “natura morta”, where dead nature is reborn in a different form.

Does the work from the Flesh Project share many of the same ideas or inspirational origins as the Prayer Mats pieces?

I look for means in our culture.

With a small trick (that is “art”) I cause a self explanatory object run into a contradiction with itself.

Please could you describe your intentions and the thought process behind the Prayer Mats.

I think the same way as our brains dream; I use free association where motifs familiar to all of us come into existence in the infinite hunting fields of the internet. I just need hunt them down. Icons and loops fuse together into a trend that only obeys its absurd aesthetics. In the course of deconstruction I rebuild an existing/non-existing religion, of course only for a single Prayer Mat as I’m already thinking of a new faith.

What are your future aspirations for your work?

I would like to continue creating absurd objects.

This project is my way of dealing with an infantile spiritual questing in today life, where there are no religions, traditions and rules. What is left is global, atheist pop-culture.
That is why I wish to rebuild an existing/non-existing religion, starting with a single prayer mat or other religious objects as I already start preparing for a new faith.

We wander around like children, collecting different elements and objects from our world and start to play with them in an attempt to build up our own reality. The defeat seems inevitable. But this is exactly why we are doing more and more to lift ourselves...
